Love Missionaries

by Damilola Oguntunde

Good morning Friend. I trust you had a great weekend.

The word “Missionary” is probably the most avoided spiritual office “tag” anyone wants to bear. We hear more of Bishop, Reverend, Prophet, Evangelist, Pastor and Teacher. Now don’t get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with being called these names as long as the one bearing it understands the import and the responsibility that accompanies the title. Never bear a name or title to which you’re not willing to bear its corresponding responsibility. James 3:1

A Missionary is someone sent on a mission into a foreign territory to promote and propagate a message or an agenda. A missionary is usually more aggressive than a casual ambassador. An Ambassador tells you what you need to know about his home country when approached, but a missionary doesn’t wait to be approached, he brings the message to your door step, he brings the message right into your space. Again, there is nothing wrong with the word “Ambassador”, the Bible refers to us as Ambassadors because we represent a foreign nationality and must do well to represent Her while we are here on earth… 2 Corinthians 5:20, Philippians 3:20. I believe we must become a bit more aggressive in our approach to bring this timeless message we have received to a world void of love. Love is quite foreign in some quarters, evidenced by the prevalent news in the airwaves… Slavery, Insecurity, Corruption, Debauchery, Pride, Nudity. All these symptoms are offshoots of a more fundamental ailment besetting the world and even in many cases, the very people in the Church; the lack of love.

There are still people who are completely void of what love even looks like. They have never had someone do anything for them without expecting something else in return. This Love is the crux of the message Jesus came to infect the world with. When Jesus was about leaving the earth after His first “Missionary” trip, His ultimate prayer was that the disciples He was leaving behind would remain in love and infect everyone they came in contact with the same. The strategy for multiplication that Jesus adopted is Love. He said by “THIS”, shall ALL men know that you are my disciples, when you have love one to another… John 13:35. I can assure you that what Thaddeus and Bartholomew knew about Christ was completely different from what the “Peters, Johns and James” of this world knew about Him. Thomas even needed some foundational teachings as basic as Faith, while Phillip probably had a learning disorder as deducible from John 14. These guys did not announce themselves to their world through their individual intellectual and theological prowess and superior knowledge of The Master, The Christ for whom they now lived. When Paul came along, as different in shade and colour as he was from the rest of the bunch, they received him and gave him a hand of fellowship… This was because even if their heads were quite different from his, their hearts were united in One purpose. The things that unite us are stronger than the factors that threaten our unity… One Body, One Spirit, One Hope, One Lord, One Faith, One Baptism (not into water but into Christ), One God and One Father.

Ephesians 4:3-6 (KJV) Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.4 There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; 5 One Lord, one faith, one baptism,
6 One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.

How could we have all these super amazing and eternal factors working and abounding in us and then concentrate on one doctrine, one interpretation, one perspective, one opinion, one knowledge… This ought not to be so.
If there is One thing we should be more than willing to share and paste on all our social media platforms, it is our LOVE for one another and the celebration of our eternal uniting Factors that can never be undone. These were the billboards of the early Church! That was what the gentiles saw and they plunged into the Church in their droves. While we are there flexing superior theological muscles on our major platforms, an onlooker who was probably considering Jesus, makes up His mind… He was messed up before considering Jesus, why would he join a bandwagon of confused people in the muddy waters plagued with the Doctrinal Accuracy Syndrome… at least so he would think.

We are Love Missionaries Folks! Should we be less concerned about sound doctrine? By all means, No! We must pursue the knowledge of the Son of God until we attain unto that stature of a Robust Spiritual Knowledge, but I’m sure Jesus factored that into the equation while praying for His disciples… because in the end, it is not knowledge that edifies and builds into that stature, it is LOVE! There is just so much going on around us, we mustn’t be blind to all these and alive to our correctness. In God’s economy, sincerity comes before accuracy, heart comes before head and definitely LOVE comes before knowledge. Colossians 1:2-3 tell us something quite profound.

Colossians 2:2-3 (KJV) 2 That their hearts might be comforted, being knit together in love, and unto all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the acknowledgement of the mystery of God, and of the Father, and of Christ;3 In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

It is only after our hearts are comforted and knit together in love, that we can enter into the fullest experience and expression of wisdom and knowledge in Christ. We would never experience verse 3 until verse 2 is a reality.

In the final analysis, it may not matter so much what you thought about some of the debates going around today, what will matter the most will be what you did with the Jesus Christ you claimed to know while you were on earth and how that impacted your fellow man.
