The Prerogative of Mercy

by Damilola Oguntunde

Good morning Friend, I trust you had an exciting weekend.

Today by God’s Grace, we will be continuing our series on the Book of Daniel. We’ll be sharing some really important insights here which I believe will bless your heart indeed. Before I go on, I would like to briefly explain something really important; Truth is always found in a balance. Anything that is skewed to a side, no matter how convincing and compelling it may sound or look, cannot be comprehensively TRUTH. Truth is wholesome, no side of it is grotesque and awkward. So, the truth about Love must not exclude chastisement and rebuke, else it becomes too soft a love to build up. It also must not be without affection and tenderness, else it becomes too hard and could break one. Love is found in the balance. Every truth should be judged on the scale of balance for proper discernment of merit.

Why am I saying all of these? Because overtime, the concept surrounding the sovereignty of God has been a major source of confusion and disparity among even the soundest of teachers of God’s Word. Some are completely against the concept of God’s sovereignty as a prerogative of God that is exclusive to Him, where man has no chance of intervention. They believe nothing of such is doctrinally sound. That God is overwhelmingly predictable based on His Word and that everything man is or will be, is a direct function of the man taking advantage of the provisions of God in Christ. The other side however are a bit more complacent, they dare not fight the will of God. Whatever they go through is definitely fore ordained by God and therefore must not be prayed against. Everything that happens to them is all a function of the sovereignty of God and cannot be undone. Who dares question God?

Truth however, as earlier introduced, is always a fusion, a balance, a wholesome approach. Is God sovereign? Absolutely! Is God predictable based on His principles? Oh Absolutely! The dilemma however is that how could these both be true at the same time? Well perhaps the same way God is Three and One all at the same time. Praise the name of the Lord!

To say God is sovereign is to say that His actions, decisions and counsels are not controlled, conditioned and influenced by parties outside of Himself as God. What this means is that God can decide to do some things that will boggle our predictable theology and still owe no man any form of explanation in the end. To assume that we have a complete and round understanding of God is to deceive our fickle minds and overestimate its mental capacity. You wonder how He allows you make your choice without force and still shows up at the end of your decision to let you see how He worked that decision out in your heart in the first place. It’s a beautiful mystery that I pray you come to terms with as your eyes of understanding are enlightened.

There was a time Apostle Paul wanted to take on this particular challenge of demystifying the sovereignty of God in Romans 9. I sincerely thought he would give a didactic exegesis of this hard -to-crack concept about God when he began with the situation of Jacob and Esau, how that God had predetermined their fates ever before they breathed their first. How it really did not matter what Esau would do or not do, he was destined to trail Jacob. I thought Paul would give a persuasive argument behind God’s “rationality” in making such a decision over lives that were not yet born. Paul would eventually evade the obvious question in the heart of every mind following the progression of the conversation by questioning the rational minds in verse 20. “Who are you to question God? Shall the formed say to He that made it, why have you made me so?” Wooooow! Is this all Paul will say? The Apostle of Grace and Faith? The one who openly declared the counsel of the Lord regarding salvation? Is this the same Paul now saying that who are we to question the rationality of some of God’s decisions?

Well Yes, that’s the same guy. He understands that there indeed are some things beyond our pay grade, not because God has no explanations for them but simply because God requires a lacuna of explanation for One of His attributes to have a purpose; MERCY. Mercy is the only language that God’s sovereignty understands. This is why the dominant character of God in Romans 9 is Mercy. The word appeared 5 times, between verses 15 & 23. Mercy is a protocol breaker. Mercy will make God do ANYTHING! Without Mercy, everything will be deserved and credit worthy, but thank God for Mercy. A poor boy from the back side of the desert can be lifted and placed to sit with princes and inherit glory. Thank God for Mercy, I can plead for what I don’t deserve.

When Daniel was faced with the impossible task of interpreting an unknown dream, he sought for the mercies of God, because this was beyond wisdom, knowledge or understanding. Data/information has to be presented or expressed before wisdom and understanding can gain further insights. This was an unknown dream… what use is wisdom for an unknown dream? Daniel needed Mercy…

Daniel 2:18 (KJV) 18 That they would desire mercies of the God of heaven concerning this secret; that Daniel and his fellows should not perish with the rest of the wise men of Babylon.

Are you in a fix? Where you have attempted the principles of growth, you have prayed and confessed, you have believed you received until you forgot what you were believing you received, you have literally done all within your power… it is time to plead for Mercy. Because in the arena of Mercy, it will never be might nor by power, it will never be of he that willeth or he that runneth, it will always be a God factor; of He that showeth Mercy. He will have Mercy on whosoever He will have Mercy. He usually has Mercy on those who seek it. Seek the Mercies of the God of heaven to grant you answers to difficult questions. Ask Him to open pathways in the desert, ask Him to cause His face to shine upon you. Ask Him for His favours. Demand for His Mercy. His Mercy has no use without situations beyond control and the predictability of principles. No one needs Mercy when principles are at actively work. We are the vessels of His Mercy and he wants to lavish His Mercy upon us. Ever seen anyone who is living a life you think they don’t deserve? They have been shown Mercy by God, that’s why you cannot link their results to their efforts. That is why you cannot link their future to their past. Mercy makes sovereignty make sense. Mercy explains the unexplainable. Glory to God.

I decree today that I am vessel of your Mercy and I am conscious of the same all the days of my life.

Ask for Mercy today. I assure you by the Grace of God that you will see the hand of God within the next few days. I speak by the spirit.

Please do well to share your testimonies for the edification of us all when the testimonies arrive. Praise the name of the Lord.

Have a great week ahead. God bless your heart.
