Trajectory of the Spirit

by Damilola Oguntunde

Good morning Friend. I trust you had a great weekend. There are so many things in life that compete for our one attention. For many people, it is how to make money, for some others, it is how to get the right spouse to marry and “settle down”(I don’t like that phrase), for some others still, it is about how they can become the best in whatever they have chosen to be the path for their life. None of these aspirations is wrong in themselves, it is actually foolishness not to have a plan for your life to submit to God for ratification, and ignorantly wait for one handwriting on the wall to tell you what to do. God hardly works in ways like that. One doesn’t need to look too far to see the myriads of things competing earnestly for our attention especially in this time and age, but the wise are not deceived. They understand the trajectory of life and that of the Spirit. People tell you things like; in this world, there are ups and downs, rising and falling, plenty and scarcity, etc which if preached in their right context is the truth. However to say that our experiences in God MUST go through seasons of inconsistencies and unpredictable curves is to say that God goes into mood swings, which I know He doesn’t lapse into. There is a trajectory of the Spirit, and it is ONLY upward and forward. Would you come with me to a passage that rightly explains this concept much better?

2 Kings 3:16 (KJV) And they said unto him, Behold now, there be with thy servants fifty strong men; let them go, we pray thee, and seek thy master: lest peradventure the Spirit of the LORD hath taken him up, and cast him upon some mountain, or into some valley. And he said, Ye shall not send.
17 And when they urged him till he was ashamed, he said, Send. They sent therefore fifty men; and they sought three days, but found him not.
18 And when they came again to him, (for he tarried at Jericho,) he said unto them, Did I not say unto you, Go not?

Reading this the first time, you might not make much sense out of it, but it blew my mind when my eyes were open to the way of the Spirit in this passage. Here we have a few sons of the prophet who recognised that the spirit of Elijah had fallen upon Elisha and began to give heed to him. Then they besought him that he should let them go and search out where Elijah was dropped by the Spirit. They knew the Spirit had taken him up quite alright, but they believed that same Spirit could also have dropped him upon some mountain or valley with broken bones and mutilated body. Elisha initially told them not to bother going because they would not find him anywhere, but they besought him until he was embarrassed by their pleas and humoured them to go ahead and try their best. These sons of the prophet had stayed so long in the house of God but knew nothing about God. They could pick out signals from the celestial wave of heaven as to knowing that Elijah was to be taken away from them, but they knew nothing about the character of the Spirit that was coming to take Him away. That someone has spent his life time in the active service of a denomination means nothing if such a person has no personal fellowship with the Holy Spirit. He may be born again and saved but his experiences in the spirit will be largely limited by his myopia and ignorance of the things of the Spirit. That a mam can give accurate prophecy doesn’t mean He knows the God of all knowledge. These sons of the prophet had information, but lacked revelation. They always have a “word” for or from one person or the other, but lacked the spiritual ingenuity to understand these words and how to profit with them. They have a form of godliness but deny the power thereof. They think they know the Spirit of God, but they fail to understand how He works. The Spirit of God does not lift up, in order to cast down. That is NEVER the intention of the Spirit of God for anyone who He ever partners with.

Proverbs 4:18 (KJV) But the path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day.

The path of the just is as a shining light, it keeps getting brighter and brighter, if the believer continually partners with the Spirit. He never intends to lift us up in order to cast us down. It is the devil that does that. That is why Apostle Paul urged Timothy not to put a novice in any office of leadership lest he be lifted up with pride and then falls into the condemnation of the devil. 1 Tim 3:6. It is the devil that lifts up to cast down, not the Spirit of God. Elisha understood this about the Spirit and he told them not to bother to go seeking Elijah because they could never find him on the earth anymore. The Spirit of God had taken him up and there was no way He would drop him on some mountain or valley. In the same vein, the Spirit of God wants to take your life to the next level. Are you a just man? If you have saving faith in the Son of God, then you are the Just and as far as the Spirit is concerned, He has only one trajectory for your life; UPWARD AND FORWARD. God doesn’t use and dump, neither does He lift and drop. Would you trust Him with your life today? Yes, in this life you will have tribulations, but that’s not the end of the story, be of good cheer, He has overcome the world and you can sail through life with a spring in your feet knowing that all things are working together for your good, no matter what your immediate circumstances may look like. Latch on to the Spirit, and be on your way to the BRIGHTER AND BRIGHTER. You can rest assured that if it is by the Spirit, then it is from glory to glory.

2 Cor 3:18 (KJV) But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.

Settle down??? A funny word indeed…but a times there is a way upward in Christ that seems downward (in the flesh)… But now actually downward like downward.
