Leadership of the Spirit (2)

by Damilola Oguntunde

Good morning Friend. I trust your weekend went well. We started a series last week; Leadership of the Spirit. The purpose of this series is to help believers have a good grasp about what it really means to be led by the Spirit of God and how to make the right decisions in the midst of contradictory alternatives. We particularly live in a perilous time when folks are just blind. Plain bland blind! Blind to the revelation of God in His Word and blind to the voice of His Spirit. I do believe that if every believer is properly taught and fed God’s Word with respect to being led by the Spirit, it will totally revolutionise their realities. Last week, we shared on some sacred cows that must be killed before we can begin to build the structure of understanding as far as being led by the Spirit is concerned. We made it clear that being led by the Spirit is not limited to a selected few who are “anointed” for ministry and neither is being led by God reserved for only the holy and perfect. Today we will continue with the sacred cows and move on from there. These sacred cows must be killed before we can have a cleared mindset to receive the teachings that will follow.

3. The louder you hear God, the seemingly more spiritual you are: This is usually a very funny concept to me actually. If we flip this around and apply it to the human relationship context, it means the exact opposite, but it’s totally amazing how Christians believe otherwise, simply because it’s a spiritual thing. Spiritual things have been mystified which ought not to be so. If I have to yell at someone to get his attention, it shows a few of things that may be wrong. It may mean that I’m not very near to the person, It also may mean the person is probably heavily distracted and needs an equivalent or higher level of noise in order to get his attention, it also may mean that the person is suffering from partial deafness and cannot hear sounds below a certain decibel level. Now these are the possible problems anyone who needs a strong loud voice for communication may be suffering from. We agree to this in the physical and social realm, but we are quick to mystify it when it comes to spiritual things. Spiritual things are easily understood by the things that are seen
Romans 1:20

No one should be proud of the fact that God speaks with him in a loud and audible voice. If God who abides in us and constantly prompts us by His Spirit needs to literally say something that will cause one to look for the voice speaking, then it shows how much attention is paid to the spirit man in such a life. God wanted to demonstrate His great might to Elijah and He appeared to have spoken through various means, most of which were spectacular and aggressive. .. But God was not in them. Where was God? In the still small voice. This represents the silent but ever firm promptings we receive from our spirit man.

1 Kings 19:11 (KKV) And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the LORD. And, behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the LORD; but the LORDwas not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the LORD was not in the earthquake:
12 And after the earthquake a fire;but the LORD was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.

I particularly love this passage of scripture because it is found in the old testament. Just to let us know that this has always been God’s preferred way of speaking with His sons. However, the palliative for the “oldies” has sadly become the desire of new creation fellas. The loud and audible voice that God chose to use in speaking to his servants of old, which was not His perfect will is now what we new creation believers look forward to. What was an inferior substitute for the the old testament folks has sadly become the obsession of new creation believers. (I heard God LOUD AND CLEAR…) Sometimes I wonder if believers really believe that the Holy Ghost dwells within their mortal bodies… Else what is the whole essence of God abiding within us in the person of the Holy Spirit if we would still be seeking every external indicator to the voice of the Spirit. We value the “confirmation” of another man beyond the “convictions” in our spirit concerning a certain thing. We definitely value the opinions of a prophet who knows our exact bank account detail and home address more than the silent dealings of the Holy Ghost in our lives. My friends, these things ought not to be so. Spectacular is not synonymous with Supernatural. Why do we think God included that 1 kings 19 experience in the Torah? So we just gloss over it? It’s simply so we would never be carried away by the shakings, fallings and risings, chiefly characterised by our charismatic services and neglect the substantial pathway to being led by the Spirit. Many have traded Gold for saw dust in a bid to have a spectacular experience. In fact, some have invited the wrong spirits into them just because they sought signs that weren’t balanced within the premise of scriptures.

If I hear God clearly but quietly, silently and even inaudibly, I’m not any inferior to the one who claims to see and sit before Jesus every morning for daily instructions for life and purpose. As a matter of fact, that person could be considered as Thomas who must see or hear before believing. Not seeing with the physical eyes but seeing the invisible and moving as seeing the invisible is a more profound show of faith than hearing every sound necessary that there would be no need for faith. I may have ruffled some feathers but friend, this is the pathway to lasting rest in the arms of the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit.

We must move past ever needing a 3rd party to validate what God had told us in the secret place. We must learn the art of yielding to the voice of the Spirit via our own spirit. This is the purpose of this series. My prayer is that may God’s voice become more distinct to you as we move on in this teachings.

We would continue from here the next time. God bless you.
