Learning to Soar with The Holy Spirit – Navigating Crises
Psalms 46:1-5 KJV
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. Selah.
There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacles of the most High. God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved: God shall help her, and that right early.
I like the way God contrasts the reality of crisis with the abrupt mention of a river. How does a river connect with what David was saying here?
Even though the earth be removed and the entire planet is in agony, trying to fight one virus, though the mountains be thrown into the midst of the sea, though economies and the stock markets are plummeting, though the still waters of our normal work life balance be troubled with roarings, though things look very gloomy, without hope and a clear direction of where the world is headed… David says for those who know something the world doesn’t know… There is a River! It is what we use in these times to navigate the rapids of uncertainties and glide on the waves of the storms.
What is this River David was talking about?
In actual terms, there was a river that was situated east side of the City of David with tributaries connected to it. This river was called Shiloah. It is said of that river that it is a soft flowing gentle river with quietness all year round. You can check Isaiah 8:6-8 and Nehemiah 3:15 for further study.
Fast track to John 9.
Jesus finds a man who was born blind, who had never seen and the next question the disciples began to ask is who sinned? The man or his parents? How can a man sin before birth for which he is now being punished after birth? Though it defies simple logic, somehow the human mind is wired by sin to think every reality in life is either a punishment for an evil or a reward for a good. We always like to link situations to causes and effects. If the world is dealing with the COVID-19, then the devil must be trying to afflict us, or then God must be punishing the world for its unquantifiaable amount of sin, or maybe China is the Country with the sinister motive to end the world all by themselves… it’s either God, or the devil or China! And many people languish at that level of communication while neglecting the weightier matters.
Jesus showed up on the scene and doesn’t acknowledge the source of the problem but goes straight to solution mode. To Him, it didn’t matter whose sin caused the blindness, He is the Light of the World and as long as He was alive, He was responsible for the Light that man needed. He was about to light up that man’s world and didn’t defer to low level conversations of blame trading. Thank God Jesus is forward thinking. We need to pick up the thinking pattern of God. He doesn’t think like man thinks. He doesn’t debate causes, he determines outcomes. So while you’re in that difficult situation, God does not sympathise with you as you pity party with questions like why me? What did I do? Where did I go wrong? How did this happen to me? God is busy saying, Joy comes in the morning! This will end in praise! But for the glory of God to be manifested! I will never leave you nor forsake you! All things are working together for your good… Hallelujah!
I know there are conversations about who cursed the earth with COVID-19, but God has moved past that. He is out there determining the outcome of COVID-19, distributing inheritances to those who will pay attention to the things of the Spirit in this season, charting courses to victory for mankind. No greater curse has mankind ever been in bondage to than the curse of sin. It was the most devastating crisis in all of human history, but even at that God didn’t join Adam and Eve in trading blames, He took responsibility for Redemption, what a God we serve!
So back to this man born blind, he had experienced darkness all his life and how Jesus was going to minister healing to him was by taking him back to the raw material that made us all; Clay. Jesus makes mud with clay and his spittle, puts it on the man’s non existent eyes and tells the man to go to a certain River.
It will interest you to know, that the river Siloam Jesus told the man to go wash in is the exact same river Shiloah David was referring to in Psalms 46. That river is the location to look for whenever you find yourself in situations that seem impossible to address, like opening the eyes of a man who was blind from his mother’s womb, or you see that the whole earth is about to be removed and mountains are being thrown into the midst of the sea or that a virus is killing more people than a nuclear weapon could ever try. We need a River of answers! David and Jesus call that river Siloam!
Siloam means Sent or Gift! In other words a Sent Gift! There is no Personality who encapsulates the dimensions of these words better than The Person of The Holy Spirit. He is The River spoken about by Jesus in John 7:37-38. As long as Jesus was in the world, He was the only custodian of that Light and that River! Jesus carried that River without measure everywhere He went. He took it to Jairus’s house, and on His way there, the woman with the issue of blood tapped from the stream. In that era, you couldn’t get healed without coming close to the custodian of that River. But Glory to God, now that He has gone to be with The Father, we now represent His capacity on earth. The good thing about our variants of Him is that we are not limited to Capernaum, or Galilee or Jerusalem, as many as believe on His name carry that River everywhere they go, whether they’re in Africa or Europe or North America or Asia. We are co-costidians of that Light and that River today! And like Jesus, we don’t debate causes, we legislate outcomes by the help of the Holy Spirit. We don’t need to go to Jerusalem to dive into Shiloah or Siloam, we carry the Rivers of living water around everywhere we go. Praise God!
This is a season to locate that River. He is the answer in trying times like this, He is the Power of the Age to come. He is the One that helps us navigate these tough times. He will bring comfort and beyond that, He will bring strategies!
Once you locate this River, three things you must do;
1. Wash off the Clay in the place of Prayer: Without prayer, we are carnality bound! Peter refused to pray and watch with Jesus when he was supposed to and therefore he became a victim of carnality. He did things he would never have believed he could do… like cutting off the ear of a servant to the High Priest, betraying Jesus multiple times… he neglected the place of prayer and therefore couldn’t handle the temptations when they came. It is in the place of Prayer God fills us with fresh doses of Himself. Just like that man born blind, you need to go wash off the clay in the River Siloam. No better way than to pray in the Spirit so you can effectively interpret what The Spirit is saying in this season. With only clay on your eyes, you will live in fear and immerse yourself in the news that sponsor more fear, you can’t hear the Spirit in such an atmos-FEAR!
2. Receive Spiritually Energised Thoughts: When we pray, we don’t just pray for the fun of it. We pray because we seek to know the mind of the Father. He who searches the mind, knows what the mind of The Spirit is… When He reveals His mind to us, He does so by introducing us to His thoughts and imaginations about what we are going through. The Holy Spirit is also known as the Power of the age to come, He can show us the aftermath of the COVID-19 and help us see how we conquered it. He can take us into 2022 and bring near that experience just so we know what to do today. Our prayers are not mere gymnastics, they ought to lead to spiritually energised thoughts capable of changing the reality of our experience.
3. Roll up Your Sleeves and Act: It was not enough that Abraham was a man of covenant, it was important that he trained 318 men born in his household. He kept training them even when it didn’t make sense why they were training. But he kept at it, because a day will come when Lot will be captured. Perhaps God had shared that intelligence with him one of those days while he was praying. Remember how God showed him that his descendants would be enslaved 400 years into the future? Remember how God told him He was about to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah? I’m sure God must have told Abraham to start preparing men for a season when he would need to go and rescue Lot. Abraham didn’t stop at praying, he received thoughts that gave birth to actions that was used to execute the agenda of God upon the earth.
If you will locate Siloam in the place of Prayer this season, the Holy Spirit can share intelligence about the future with you. After all, He was sent to show you things to come.
John 16:7-15 KJV
Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: Of sin, because they believe not on me; Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more; Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged. I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you. All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you.
This Series on The Holy Spirit still goes on, there is so much to glean. Stay excited!
We are Overcomers! We are Victorious! Nothing in the history of mankind has ever been able to overpower humanity, not even sin… the lions and the bear have come and we conquered them, this COVID-19 shall also be like one of them!
But we need to locate the RIVER!
