You May Never Know

by Damilola Oguntunde

Good morning DPR, I hope you had a great week? Just a quick word for someone; God laid it on my heart to tell someone who WILL be reading this post to stay calm and not fret, that help is on the way, but that you must remain calm like you know the help is on the way. I’m trusting God with you, God’s hand is already at work, stay calm. Ok so let’s delve straight into the topic of today. Hmmmn I know you’re wondering what it is you may never know. Before we go into that, i just want to note that we’re still on the Character Series, and I must say it’s been a blessing to a lot of people including myself. You’re the reason I keep writing, and God bless you for your consistent readership. Today and maybe next week, I’ll be dealing with the subject of “Humility” otherwise known as “Meekness” It’s amazing sometimes when I hear things like this from believers; “I like that guy, he’s very humble”. It’s even funnier when you hear people say such about those they hardly know. Saying that about someone is like saying… “I like this house, the foundation is very organised”… because you can’t judge a building’s foundation by its super structure. The foundation is not seen by anyone, the only set of people who can perhaps give the most accurate state of the foundation are those who designed and laid it, so is the issue of Humility. Humility is a posture of the heart towards God, and only God can ultimately judge the posture of any man’s heart.. Ok let me pose a question to you… Let’s say your name is Lindsay, if God says to you, “Lindsay my son, I want you to tell everyone you know that you Lindsay my son are the most humble man in the world… Lindsay, say no more than I told you to say” would you Lindsay say what God told you to say? Hmmmn…

Numbers 12:3(KJV) (Now the man Moses was very meek, above all the men which were upon the face of the earth.)

Many times when we read that passage of scriptures, we forget to realise that it was Moses who actually wrote that same verse about himself being the most humble man in the world. If it were today he did that, I bet the world media would have attacked him for being so arrogant and self obsessed. But here’s the meekest man in the world writing about himself that he indeed was the meekest man. I know that sort of boggled your theology for a moment, maybe it still does. We are very quick to tag someone “humble” if the person always denies our compliments, tells us how unworthy he is of honour, bows his head a million times to greet his colleagues and subordinates at work, and probably goes about everything he does pretty slowly. I dont’t blame us, we are humans and the best we see except by discerning of spirits is the outward expressions of a person and not the heart. However, no man can tell for sure if another man is humble or proud, because you just may never know. Humility is man’s most difficult task while pride is man’s easiest pitfall. I’ll tell you why… True humility is you having no opinion of yourself apart from God’s opinion of you, and pride is simply the opposite, that is having an opinion of yourself that is contrary to God’s opinion of you. That’s a pretty difficult task, having to refute everything you’ve always thought of yourself and receive God’s thoughts of you, that’s why the weapon of our warfare’s primary target is pride… Our greatest threat to everything God wants us to be is right between our ears.

2 Cor 10:4(KJV) (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) 5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.

Pride is when God tells you that you’re the best, and you go about saying you’re nothing but a low grader. Pride is not just when you exalt yourself above and against what God calls you, in fact in most cases, it is when you demote and abase yourself to something far lower than what God has called you. In actual sense whether you demoted yourself or exalted yourself relative to God’s perception of you, you have exalted your OWN opinion of yourself above God’s opinion of you. Many of the things we call humility is pure theatrics. If I want people to think I’m humble, I can as well talk, dress and behave the way I know people perceive humility, and by so doing gain entrance into their hearts. God is the sole judge of humility, of course there are genuine fruits of humility, but the outward should not be our focus in judging if a man is humble or not. Humility is so key to receiving from God, that the first thing the Word of God does in our lives is to break down every sense of pride in our lives and produce humility, because without humility, the Word of God cannot profit anyone.

James 1:21(KJV) Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with MEEKNESS the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls. Psalms 119:130(KJV) The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple.

Humility towards the Word is a compulsory prerequisite to receiving from the Word. You must put away all the opinions you’ve believed about yourself via experience, and then receive the Word of God as the ultimate expression of your true identity. Trust me, you will have to keep casting down imaginations of fear, doubt and lack of faith in what God has said. Humility is between a man and his God. Humility is in submission, not in subversion. God wants you to willingly submit to Him and be genuinely vulnerable to Him. Let Him know you have nowhere else to go if He turns you down, and be sure He never will. God really enjoys a heart that is bent towards Him, infact… True Humility produces boldness, because if you are vulnerable to God, He makes sure it’s His exclusive right, and that you will never have to be vulnerable to man. If you bow before God, you definitely will stand before men. Sometimes that’s where we get it wrong, we call bold people proud and make wimps feel like they are humble. Let God be the judge of another man’s humility, because you just may never know, and meanwhile make sure you hold God’s opinion about you as the most important in your life, right there is HUMILITY. We shall continue on this very powerful virtue in our next post. Enjoy the weekend.

Gal 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23 MEEKNESS, temperance: against such there is no law.
